Loose tube cables are the preferred design for cables installed outdoors, in ducts, trenches or overhead. With up to 12 optical fibers in each loose tube, these cables are ideally suited for high fiber count “backbone” or trunking applications. Depending on the materials, loose tube cables meet a variety of flame tests, including IEEE 383 and UL 1666.
CableLAN Nuclear will be happy to provide you with more information about these cables. Please call 1-800-840-6655 or Email us.
Basic Construction
The optical fibers are enclosed within a hollow thermoplastic tube and each tube is filled with a moisture resistant gel or powder to prevent water damage to the fiber. Any number of loose tubes are combined under a common outer jacket. The cable materials depend upon the required flame rating.
Loose tube cables can contain up to 288 optical fibers. Two versions of loose tube cables are manufactured specifically for nuclear power plants, using any fiber type – 62.5/125, 50/125 (standard performance), 50/125 (10 Gigabit Ethernet performance) and single mode. These fibers are specially made for enhanced radiation resistance. Neither cable type uses PVC materials.
The cables are manufactured by Prysmian under NQA-1 and 10CFR50, Appendix B quality assurance programs. We welcome your review or audit of our facilities and processes.
S779L Series, S5014L, Loose Tube Cables, PVC-Free, IEEE 383 flame, UL 1666 flame, Up to 216 fibers
Prysmian’s S5014L series of loose tube cables are manufactured to meet the flame test requirements of IEEE383 and UL 1666 (riser) . These LSZH (PVC-free) cables provide a high level of flame resistance. The gel-free construction makes installation and termination easier and faster.
